FCC Chairman Powell Visits Current Technologies Broadband over Power Line Network in Potomac, Maryland. Back to Press Releases

POTOMAC, MD, April 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Communications Commission Chairman Michael K. Powell today visited a home in the Washington D.C. suburbs to experience first hand the next big thing in last-mile, high-speed Internet access -- Broadband over Power Lines. Current Technologies maintains this home in a neighborhood that is part of a market and technology trial presently underway in conjunction with Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO). Chairman Powell viewed high-speed Internet, home networking, Internet radio, voice over IP, Internet gaming and video-on-demand services operating concurrently over a broadband connection that is maintained through the home's existing power lines.

The Potomac deployment is one of two trials that Current Technologies and its utility partners have underway. The other trial is taking place in suburban Cincinnati with Cinergy Corp.. Current Technologies expects that the service will be available commercially later this year.

"We are honored to have the opportunity to demonstrate to Chairman Powell that Broadband over the Power Lines is now a reality," said Jay Birnbaum, President of Current Technologies. "By partnering with utility companies such as Pepco and Cinergy we will provide broadband Internet access to virtually every outlet in customers' homes."

As part of these trials, more than 100 households in Potomac and Cincinnati are now using Current Technologies(TM) Broadband over Power Line (BPL) solution. The Current Technologies solution needs no truck roll to a home and provides customers broadband access at symmetrical speeds that are better than DSL and cable modem through proprietary equipment that is attached to utility power lines. Customers connect to the service by using a small, commercially available power line modem that connects to their computer and plugs into ordinary power outlets.
